AFL: Brisbane v Essendon

The Bombers travel to Queensland looking for a win to get them to 4/4 in what has been an up and down start to the season for them. At times they’ve looked like top four material and other times they’ve resembled a team destined to miss the eight.

The Lions always looked likely to struggle this season and after a start with some promise and a win two weeks ago against the Saints they find themselves in need of a boost once again after a hammering in round 6 by the Swans.

This is an interesting match-up with the Lions having conceded an average of 116 points per game so far in 2014 and the Bombers toothless in the last four rounds, averaging only 65.4 points scored.

The Bombers lead 22-16 overall but the Lions have won 10 of the 14 games at the Gabba, with one match drawn.

We’re going down a different route for a bet in this match by looking at the 1st quarter handicap market.

So far in 2014 Brisbane have scored an average of 12.4 points in the 1st quarter, conceding an average of 18.7. Essendon have averaged 24.7, conceding 13.8.

Brisbane have lost the 1st quarter in 6 of the 7 matches by an average of 6.3 points. Essendon have won 4 from 7 with one drawn. They have averaged 10.9 points more than their opponents in the opening term.

Brisbane have scored 3, 1 and 12 points in the opening period in their 3 matches at the Gabba while Essendon put 36 points on Carlton and 31 on Collingwood.
