World number 1 Rory McIlroy returns it defend the title he won 12 months ago when Adam Scott threw the tournament away on the 18th and Scott will be the main obstacle to Rory defending his title.
The other star attraction is Jordan Spieth who tees it up Down Under for the first time.
We can count ourselves unlucky not to have had a winner of some sort last weekend with our win selection Victor Dubuisson finishing 2nd and our top 5 bet Louis Oosthuizen finishing 6th after bogeying 17 and only parring the par 5 18th.
There is no meaningful course form to go on this week which means no Oddy ratings to guide us but I think i’ve spotted two players with the potential to get in on the McIlroy/Scott/Speith show.
22 year old Australian Cameron Smith has made huge progress in his fledgling career in the last 12 months starting when he won the Australian Amateur Championship in 2013 and culminating in a 5th placed finish on the PGA Tour at the Cimb Classic at the start of this month. His putting really caught the eye that week and he finished ranked 3rd in putting.
He had a really solid season on the Asian Tour and I can see him contending this week.
One thing we know about Rhein Gibson is that he can go low. Very low. He shot a world record round of 55 in the US in 2012 and closed with a round of -7 last week at the Aussie Masters. He finished 4th in this event last year.
