The Emirates Australian Open comes from the Royal Sydney golf course this year and Jordan Spieth returns after winning the event in 2014 and finishing tied for 2nd last year. The man he tied with in 2015 was none other than Adam Scott, who provides the biggest obstacle to Spieth getting his hands on the trophy again this week.
The bookies make the pair just about joint favourites at $4.33 Spieth and $4.50 Scott so it will come as no surprise that we are looking elsewhere for a bit of each way value. Both have had their putting issues in the past 12 months and the undulating greens at this track will test the technique and touch of both. I played Royal Sydney once and think I four-putted half a dozen times on my way to a spectacularly unspectacular score of something way over 100.
Adam Scott will no doubt be keen to erase the memories of the last time the Aussie Open was played at this course when he threw the tournament away late in round four, handing the victory to Rory McIlroy.
In last year’s event we had a nice winning top 10 bet on Rod Pampling who stormed up the leaderboard and into the top 10 with a final round of -10 and the veteran Aussie went one better with an opening round of -11 which set him on his way to winning on the PGA Tour just two weeks ago.
The field he beat in that tournament, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, was significantly stronger than the one he’ll face this week and he’s our first bet, each way at $29 with
I’ve been impressed with the game of Todd Sinnott every time i’ve seen him play at this time of year in the local events but he has yet to kick on to the next level. He is very long off the tee and finished tied for 8th in the event last year when he came into the week in poor form having missed five of his last 7 cuts. His better form this time around gives me hope that he can contend this week at long odds.

It often pays to look of the player with the best form in the local tournaments that take place at this time of year and that player is probably Adam Blyth who won the NSW Open by three shots to back up a victory in the South Pacific Open two weeks prior.
