Golf: The Players' Championship

The Players’ Championship takes place this week from the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

This is a course that does not favour the bigger hitters, although they have won their fair share of events here. Neither does it require the sort of player that relies heavily on accuracy off the tee. The key stats here are, firstly,  greens in regulation then all round ball striking, strokes gained tee to green and scrambling.

Course: TPC Sawgrass (Stadium Course), Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Local resident Jim Furyk is in tip top form, winning two weeks ago at the RBC Heritage where he ranked t10th in GIR and 1st in strokes gained tee to green while he should have beaten Rory McIlroy in the semi final of the match play last week. He finished 2nd here last year.

Jimmy Walker impressed in this last year with a closing round of 65 to finish tied for 6th. His form at this course is progressive with finishes of 35th and 15th before that.

He never showed with a chance at the Masters and went out early in the WGC Matchplay but showed his good form by winning the Texas Open at the end of March.

Lee Westwood has been one of the best ball strikers around for many years now and he looked to be hitting it as well as ever when beating Jordan Spieth in the Matchplay. This will give him confidence going into this week where he has a good record with three top 10s in his last four attempts.

Harris English is simply too big at his current odds. He ranks 28th in GIR and 16th in ball striking in 2015.

Daniel Berger appears on these pages for the first but probably not the last time. He has 9 top 25’s from 17 starts in his debut season on the PGA Tour.

My fellow Oddy writer Mark Phillips has talked me into backing David Hearn. He ranked 1st in GIR on his last start when t6th in the Zurich Classic and has some good form here with a 6th placed finish just last year.
