The Players Championship is often referred to as the 5th Major, which it clearly isn’t but that doesn’t stop it being one of the most entertaining weeks of the year with the famous – love it or hate it (i love it) – short par 3 three 17th to an island green that tests the nerves to the maximum of every player, especially those in contention in the final round.
Good weather is forecast all week at TPC Sawgrass for what will be a true test of the golfers’ all round ability.
This week we’ll use the Oddy ratings with a keen eye to those who have played well in the last couple of years at the Players with 8 of the last 10 winners having a top 20 finish to their name in one or both of the previous two renewals.

|Oddy Oddy Oddy Recent and Course Form Ratings|
|1||Rory McIlroy||92.3||$15||Bet365, Sportsbet, Ladbrokes|
|5||Jim Furyk||84.5||$34||Bet365, Sportsbet|
|6||Matt Kuchar||82.2||$19||Bet365, Sportsbet|
Rory tops the ratings by 5 points and that is normally enough for me to put him in the staking plan but at $15 i’m going to swerve him, and Adam Scott who is also $15. Both have big chances of winning, of course, and i might look to back one or both of them should they start round 1 badly and i can get $25 or so on Betfair.
Rickie Fowler is very tempting at $67 but he’s let us down the last two weeks and could well be just going off the boil.
Third top rated Henrik Stenson is our first pick. He simply loves it here, winning in 2009 and with a further 4 top 10’s to his name. Stenson showed he was in good nick with a 5th placed finish in China on his most recent start. Stenson is $29 with SPORTINGBET.COM.AU or SPORTSBET.COM.AU
Luke Donald was a bit unlucky not to win his most recent start at the Valspar Championship when he was denied by a Matt Kuchar bunker hole out late in the day and he looks ready to win again after a lean year in 2013. He has 3 top 20’s in his last Players’ Championships and at $26 with LADBROKES.COM.AU his odds are big enough to warrant an investment.
Aussie Geoff Ogilvy has drawn me in once again with his appearance on the Oddy ratings top 10 list and even though we’ve done our hard earned on him a couple of times recently he still has me convinced that he’s going to go very close, and soon. He has 4 top 25’s at the Players including a 12 placed finish in 2012 when he wasn’t in great form. He finished 14th last week at the Wells Fargo Championship and at $151 with LADBROKES.COM.AU or BET365.COM.AU i’ll be getting involved each way where we can get top 6 places.
I’m going to add one player from outside of the Oddy ratings this week in Martin Kaymer. I was interested to hear him say this week that he’s finally stopped tinkering with his swing after close to 3 years. His most recent form of 31, 23, 18 has a progressive look to it and he has 43rd, 15th and 19th place finishes here in the last 3 years, when he’s been out of form for the most part. He’s $91 each way top 6 places with BET365.COM.AU and that will do for me.
