It was a case of so near yet so far once again last week, just about breaking even with partial place returns on Charley Hoffman.

Our $61 tip Justin Thomas traded at around $2.60 on Betfair minutes before putting his approach in the water from a fairway bunker on his way to a round shattering double bogey on the par four 16th.

This week the PGA Tour moves swiftly along to TPC Scottsdale, a par 71 course that has undergone quite severe redevelopments since last year’s renewal. Hopefully the general course characteristics will not have changed too much despite the changes.

The most notable hole on the course from a spectators and players point of view is the 162 yard par three 16th hole which houses around 15,000 flag waving, beer swilling golf fans. Some players love it, some clearly do not.

I’ve bleated on about Hideki Matsuyama enough on these pages for readers to know i’m a big fan. He finished 4th here last year and his tied 3rd at the recent Tournament of Champions suggests he comes here in good nick despite missing the cut last week.

Harris English tied for 3rd at the Sony Open and has shot in the 60’s in seven of his last eight competitive rounds. He tied for 30th last week where he ranked 3rd in GIR – he had just 4 bogeys all week. English has form figures of 15, 57 and 9 here.

Justin Thomas could easily have won last week and with debutants having won at TPC Scottsdale before I have to put him in the staking plan. We’ll get our money back if he decides not to tee it up.

Brendan Steele has course form that reads 53, 5, 6 and 6. These numbers coupled with his closing round of 64 which led to a 2nd placing last week and you have a player that will be widely backed. At his current odds I want to be one of the masses.

Robert Streb makes his Phoenix Open debut here but has enviable current form at all sorts of tracks. His worst finish in his last seven tournaments is tied for 37th.

I’m going to add two more players this week at very big prices that could fare much better than their current odds suggest.

1.5 units on each to finish in the top 10:

Pat Perez at $10 with Screenshot 2014-05-03 13.10.10

SJ Park at $15 with Screenshot 2014-05-03 13.10.10

If you shop around you might see bigger on both of these players with only a couple of books up at the moment.
