It might be hard for some to get too excited about the PGA Tour event this week after one of the best final rounds to a Major ever on Monday morning, but once we get underway at the Wyndham Championship on the par 70 Sedgefield Country Club course in North Carolina, Rory McIlroy’s superb win will be put to the back of our minds as we continue our search for winners.
One angle i’m keen on this week is siding with players with a North Carolina connection. Webb Simpson, Davis Love and Carl Pettersson are all recent winners here and they all either live or went to college in the State, or both.

Oddy Oddy Oddy Recent and Course Form Ratings

Joe Durant heads up the Oddy ratings and he was an each way bet for us a couple of weeks ago at the Barracuda Championship and although he didn’t finish in the money he did get up to 2nd on the leaderboard before being swamped by late starters in the modified stableford format.
Durant hasn’t played here since 2011 but perhaps he should have as in his last eight rounds here (2011 and 2010) he’s gone round in 67, 70, 67, 65, 68, 67, 66 and 64. That’s an impressive average score of 66.75.
His recent form reads 31, 6, 11, 9, 12 and 17 and at his current odds he’s definitely overpriced. He hasn’t won since 2006 but he is a four time winner on the PGA Tour.

I’m starting to sound like a broken record with Bill Haas and he’s yet to make us any money but he has two top 10’s at the Wyndham to go with solid recent form and he was all born and went to college in North Carolina.

David Toms sits in 5th spot on the Oddy ratings and he has finishes of 24th, 2nd, 17th and 16th here in the last five years. He has a 26th and a 13th placing in his last three PGA Tour starts.
The big question mark surrounding Toms is his fitness as he withdrew from the Barracuda and the USPGA with a bad back but he’s experienced enough to know whether he’s fit enough to compete so hopefully he won’t play one round and then withdraw. His odds with no fitness doubts would be around half of what they are currently so i’m happy to take the chance.

Wes Roach is a speculative pick and he’s in the staking plan for two reasons. He went to college in North Carolina so should be very familiar with the course and his 21st placed finish at the Barracuda could have been much better as he was bang in contention for the first two rounds.

William McGirt is always worth looking at in the first round leader markets – he’s shot opening rounds of 67, 65, 65, 66 and 64 this year with the 64 most recently just last month at the John Deere – and as a North Carolina native and someone who went to college in neighbouring South Carolina he is worth a punt this week.
