Over/Under goals in first group matches

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa was a gold mine for those punters who backed under 1.5 or 2.5 goals in the first ’round’ of matches, i.e. each team’s first match of the tournament.

Fourteen of the 16 matches ended with 0, 1 or 2 goals and eight of the 16 ended with 0 or 1 goals. The most popular score was 1-1 which occurred six times.

In the 2006 World Cup in Germany eight of the 16 went under 2.5 goals and 6 under 1.5 goals.

In the 2002 World Cup in South Korea/Japan 9 of the 16 matches went under 2.5 and 3 under 1.5.

In total, over the last three World Cups, there have been 48 first ’round’ matches and 31 (64.6%) went under 2.5 goals and 17 (35.4%) went under 1.5 goals.

This suggests the odds should be in the region of $1.56 for under 2.5 goals and $2.82 for under 1.5 goals for these first matches.

In the group matches as a whole, in 2006 there were an average of 2.44 goals per game and in 2010 just 2.10.

In the 2006 tournament 44% of group matches went over 2.5 goals and 35% in 2010, 73% went over 1.5 goals in 2006 and just 60% over 1.5 goals in 2010.
