Argentina

• Aguero is out after picking up a thigh injury against Nigeria.
• Unimpressive in the group despite picking up 9 points and will need to improve performances.
• Heavily reliant on Messi so far, the Barcelona player has scored 4 of their 6 goals.

Unavailable Doubtful Returning
Aguero – ST – Injured None None

Switzerland

• von Bergen remains the only absentee through injury so the starting eleven should be the same again.
• Drmic and Shaqiri were devastating as a pair versus Honduras and will carry the nation’s hopes here.
• They expect to have support of the Brazilian fans and are highly motivated to do well for Hitzfeld.

Unavailable Doubtful Returning
von Bergen – CB – Injury None None

Betting Preview: Argentina (5) v Switzerland (12)

These teams last met in a friendly in 2012 when Argentina won 3-1. So far Argentina have relied on the brilliance of Lionel Messi to ensure they’ve reached this stage with a 100% record as the little maestro has scored four of their six goals while they’ve looked vulnerable at the back.

Similarly Switzerland found that their star player, Xherdan Shaqiri, was at his most brilliant right when they needed him as the Bayern attacker scored a hat-trick to see the Swiss through to the second round. Despite coming into the tournament being labelled as a largely defensive team Ottmar Hitzfeld side have been shambolic at times at the back and it has been their attack that has looked far more impressive.

In the past four years Switzerland have played four competitive games against teams ranked in the top 20 and both teams have scored every time, with an average of 4.50 goals per game. Including friendlies against top-20 sides in this time six of their nine such matches against such sides have had at least four goals.

Since 1990 there have been 30 Last 16 matches in the World Cup where the higher ranked side was a top-eight side and they have W17-D7-L6. Since 1990 CONMEBOL teams have W77-D20-L10 in matches against UEFA nations that have been played in South America.

Argentina have won 10 of their last 13 games against UEFA nations as well as nine of their last 10 such matches played in South America. Both teams have scored in six of their last seven competitive matches and there have also been at least three goals in five of their last six knockout matches. We think Argentina look too good for Switzerland but they have looked vulnerable defensively and with both teams better going forward
