The Pies and the Cats meet at the MCG on Friday with both teams coming off wins in round 5. The Pies beat Carlton in a very convincing manner with several of their youngsters – Adams , Crisp, Oxley and Grundy in particular – taking significant steps in their progression as AFL footballers.
The Cats beat an unsurprisingly inconsistent Richmond team, mainly due to a dominant 2nd quarter which saw them lead by 28 points at half time.
My view on the Cats win is that Richmond made them look better than they actually are, although they are not a bad side, by trying to play too controlled a game. To show their best they need to play with speed and freedom, something they only did when Damien Hardwick’s misguided gameplan had been abandoned.
I like the Pies at the -4.5 point line but I have one worry and that is Tom Hawkins and specifically how Jack Frost, assuming he is given the job, will fare dealing with the Cats’ main goalscoring threat.
There are no top goal scorer markets up yet but I will take some insurance on the Pies line bet by staking something small on Hawkins for top goalscorer. It is of course possible that both bets could cop.
