These are surely among the last of our bets of this campaign and, let’s face it, it was all going well for us until February – a month bleak enough as it is in the land of our soccer action. Since then it’s been a dire return. Not much we can do about that now. As I’ve reminded readers before, it is pretty standard to suffer such runs, especially at our average strike rate. (One calendar year, I bet 60 grand and made an overall loss of 89 quid, but still won pretty well in both the seasons that year spanned).

We’ll be back. For now, chance your arm on these if you’re still with us:

Blackburn vs ASTON VILLA

Rovers need to win to survive, Villa are one of those teams that supposedly have nothing to play for. That’s the only explanation for their absurdly inflated odds against an inferior team. However, the effect of teams’ relative necessity to win at this stage of the season is less in fact than the bookies’ prices would suggest. This one stands out as a bet at $3.76 with Screenshot 2014-05-03 15.52.18

It’s appropriate that Fulham are favourites to win this, but again the prices contain a huge bias on Fulham’s need to win it while Brentford’s season is effectively over. I’d challenge this view as these are close neighbours and upsetting the home side’s play-off plans will be motivation enough for the Bees in the absence of any other. They’re also a good team themselves, and Fulham are often vulnerable defensively. Brentford at $6.0 is irresistible with Screenshot 2014-05-03 15.52.18

AFC Wimbledon vs OLDHAM

This is likely to be a match in which both managers are tempted to give some youngsters a run-out, neither side having much to play for now. So it’s difficult to assess their relative chances – probably about equal. If that’s right, then Oldham are a bet at $3.52 with Screenshot 2014-05-03 15.52.18

Shrewsbury recently achieved safety while Oxford’s push for the play-offs fell at the second last hurdle, albeit with a terrific 3 nil win at Millwall. Technically, two more teams “with nothing to play for”. Oxford have gone missing at home enough times during an otherwise decent season, while Shrewsbury have been largely competitive in their games without winning many of them. They’re good value to sneak a win at $4.50 with Screenshot 2014-05-03 13.10.10

Carlisle vs NEWPORT

This is a really intriguing game between teams who have been battling at opposite ends of the table all season. Carlisle have definitely suffered from the collywobbles of late, and been quite vulnerable in games at home. Newport are a cornered rat who seem to have got over their fear and are giving everyone a decent game – except when they let in six to Plymouth. They’re more likely to stay in it in Cumbria, and are reasonable at $3.41 to win with Screenshot 2014-05-03 15.52.18
