It’s April Fools’ Day in England, so let’s try and fool IT and end up looking pretty clever instead of the mugs the last few weeks have made of us. It’s about time we did and, having reviewed the matches we’ve bet on lately, am convinced that we’re not doing much wrong in our selections. It’s just not going our way – and that is the way of this game. (You have to wonder who’d want to be a manager of a soccer team; the stress being stood on the touchline must be immense).
It’s truly the run-in now, and bookies’ quotes start to reflect the relative motives of opposing teams. In league two, for example, Newport County at the bottom of the league are going to have to win most of their games if they are to survive. They’re up against Crawley – a better team than Newport, if not exactly a brilliant one – who are neither in danger of relegation nor hope of promotion. Presumably, that’s why their odds are inflated. It makes it interesting. Here we go with two from our three divisions:
Ipswich vs BIRIMINGHAM
Birmingham are attractive for this because they’ve got a slightly better squad than Ipswich, who have been poor in their last two home games. Gianfranco Zola has started to turn the visitors’ form around after his appalling start, so the $3.5 for Birmingham is the bet
Wolves vs CARDIFF
Wolves have caught the eye with some terrific performances at Brentford and Fulham recently, but there are few teams who are so disparate home and away. It’s a game that is very difficult to assess, which in itself makes the $3.7 about Cardiff a bet.
Bradford vs WALSALL
It’s obscene that any team in this league should be $8 to win at another, but that’s what they reckon of Walsall’s chances here. It’s right that they are the outsiders, but they should be half this price in my book.
Bristol Rovers vs SHREWSBURY
The Shrews continue to struggle, but they are competitive in most of their games and are due a break. They’ve won at Millwall and scored in each of their last ten aways, rarely being beaten by more than a goal. Take around $5 about them
Luton vs BLACKPOOL at $3.5
Newport vs CRAWLEY at $3.7
