Golf: Farmers Insurance Open

Another nearly week – is that 3 or 4 in a row? – last week as Matsuyama, Justin Thomas and Robert Streb all looked likely to collect well into the final round only for them to fall away one by one. It’s coming though, i’m confident of that.

The Farmers Insurance Open is played on the North and South courses at Torrey Pines with the North being far the easier of the two.

The South course, at 7,698, is the longest on the PGA Tour so distance off the tee is a big positive here but not at the expense of accuracy as the rough is long and naturally difficult to get the ball out of with any sort of precision.

Tiger Woods is the undisputed king of Torrey Pines with form figures since 2001 of 4,5,1,10,1,1,1,1,1- – 44-1 mc but his form is such that even the early $67 available was of no interest. He genuinely looks like the worst player on the PGA Tour at the moment and, incredibly at this event, is odds against to make the cut.

There is an angle here that, so far, I’ve yet to see anyone mention and that is form at Augusta.

Bubba Watson, two time Masters winner, won this in 2011. Brandt Snedeker, winner in 2012, has two top 10’s at Augusta in seven attempts including a 3rd place in 2008. Marc Leishman pushed Adam Scott and Angel Cabrera all the way when Scott won and has two 2nd placed finishes here and of course Tiger Woods went OK at Augusta too.

Like Augusta, the winner will need to move the ball both ways, be good with long irons and a high ball flight will be an advantage.

Marc Leishman’s form here of 2, 9, 52, mc, 2 is very solid and he is a player that, as mentioned, has form at Augusta and showed he is good form with a 62 in round two at the Sony Open in his most recent event.

Brandt Snedeker’s form at this event resembles that of Marc Leishman’s: 2, 9, 1, mc, 2 and his current form reads 10, 10, 10, mc, 10. He closed with a 66 last week and when Snedeker’s putter gets hot it’s time to get him in the staking plan. he ranked 3rd in strokes gained putting last week.

Dustin Johnson has spent almost exactly 6 months getting over his coke/booze/coke and booze (delete as appropriate) issues and although hunch betting is a fast way to the poor house, reports coming from the practice rounds all say he’s striking the ball really well and with the nappy factor on his side (he’s just become a father) i’m keeping him onside this week.

It was a toss up between Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama for the last each way pick and in the end I simply went for Thomas as his odds were bigger. Both are in fantastic form and a win for either would not surprise. Thomas finished 10th here last year.

Aaron Baddeley has caught the eye recently and has three recent top 15 finishes here when he’s been in poorer form.
