The Scottish Open is with us in its usual spot the week before the Open Championship and this year’s renewal returns to Castle Stuart, the course that hosted the event from 2011 to 2013 with the winners from those events, Milky Phil, Luke Donald and (Ask) Jeev Milka Singh, all in this weeks field.

You’d think that with Donald and Singh not the longest off the tee by any means this could be a shot makers track rather than one for bombers but it’s wide open and reasonably long at 7,200 yards so looks like it will be a fair test for all.

My first pick is from the bombers category. Nicolas Colsaerts finished 8th in 2011 and 3rd in 2013 in the Scottish Open so is clearly suited to the track and he is in excellent form. He finished placed for us just five weeks ago and should come into this in confident nick.

Regular readers of this column will be aware that I tipped George Coetzee for a big year in 2016 and so far i’ve been proved incorrect as in the main he’s struggled a bit. He tied for 3rd with Colsaerts in this in 2011 however and he looks like he’s been grinding himself into some sort of form. He actually played some very solid golf to finish 21st in the Bridgestone Inv last week. A winner in Qatar he won’t mind if the wind gets up.

Raphael Jacquelin has been in good form on the European Tour with a top 5 and a top 10 finish in his last three starts. He finished 8th on this course in 2013 and 8th in the Open Championship in 2011.
