It doesn’t get any better than the Open Championship at St Andrews and that’s exactly what we’ve got to look forward to this week.

Long hitters have an advantage at the Old Course as well as players that can avoid three putting with accurate lag putts.

Martin Kaymer returned to form at the Scottish Open last week where he finished 4th and has an excellent course record with a win, a second and two seventh placed finishes in his last six visits here.

The Old Course suits Kaymer down to the ground as he is a very poor chipper and with the large run off areas around the greens he’ll be able to use the putter and keep the wedges in his bag.

1.5 units each way at $34 with Screenshot 2014-05-03 13.10.10 (1st 6 places)

Charl Schwartzel struggled with links golf early in his career, missing his first four cuts at St Andrews but, like others including Phil Mickelson, he has grown to love the challenge that this type of golf presents and now plays well here with two top 10’s in his last four starts at the course.

His last two tour starts have produced top 10 finishes and he will be determined to emulate compatriots Brandon Grace and Louis Oosthuizen’s big shows at the US Open.

Ross Fisher is an excellent links golfer and he has been sneaking in to a bit of very solid form with recent form figures of 35, 11 and 7.

Winning may be a bit of a stretch – although i have thrown a few dollars at him each way ay 200/1 – he looks like really good value to be the top Englishman.

1 unit each way Top English at $23 with Screenshot 2014-06-06 12.59.13 (1st 4 places)

Like Ross Fisher, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood has progressive recent form figures of 27, 11 and 10 and has an enviable record at St Andrews with three top 5’s in his four attempts at the course.

I’m resisting the temptation to put him up as an outright pick and instead will look to the 1st round leader market. He tees off at 1.01pm and at the moment that looks OK weather wise. He may even see a bit of sunshine.

1 unit each way 1st round leader at $81 with Screenshot 2015-07-15 09.42.11 (1st 7 places)
