Dustin Johnson got us back in the winner’s circle last week with a win at $23 and we’ll be looking to follow this up with another winner in the Valspar Championship played at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook, Florida.

Copperhead is a difficult par 71 at 7,340 yards with five par 3’s and 4 par 5’s and featuring Bermudagrass greens.

Recent winners include John Senden, Luke Donald and Jim Furyk which tells us that shot making rather than big hitting should be the order of the day.

Luke Donald at $29 looked underpriced on first glance after a 49th place at Doral last week but considering the finish there was fought out by the game’s three biggest hitters in DJ, Bubba and JB Holmes, Doral was never going to suit Donald’s skill set.

His form here is unrivalled with recent numbers reading 6, 1, 4, 4.

Ten of Martin Laird’s last dozen rounds have been in the 60’s and he’s had a few weeks to get over the late capitulation which cost him the Phoenix Open title. How he putted in the first three rounds of that tournament lingers in the memory and his 5th place here in 2011 is encouraging.

Shawn Stefani has some decent form on tough courses like this one including finishing 7th on debut here in 2013 when he led after round 1 with a 65. He is a player I like a lot as he has such a good all round game; he drives the ball straight and long, hits plenty of greens in regulation and can get a hot putter. He should enjoy returning to the scene of his excellent opening round from 2 years ago.

Will Mackenzie was an excellent 6th in Puerto Rico last week and while we shouldn’t get carried away with the form of the weaker PGA Tour events he does like it here as his 4th place last year tells us and he plays well in Florida generally.

I like Brendon De Jonge on his favoured Bermudagrass greens and a 5th placed finish here in 2011 coupled with recent form figures of 25 and 10 make him worth a small bet.
