The first World Golf Championship (WGC) event of the year is the Cadillac Championship from the ‘Blue Monster’ at Doral.
It’s nicknamed the Blue Monster after the amount of water in play and the course’s length – LONG.
The big hitters have dominated here recently with the top three last year of Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson and JB Holmes three of the very longest off the tee on tour.
It usually pays to stick with top 20 players in these WGC events and we are not deviating from that with our selections.
Bubba won his last event and has two seconds and a third to his name in his last four starts around here. It fits his game perfectly and he should be favourite to win this over both Rory and Jordan Spieth.
Rickie Fowler has been in the form of his life in 2016 with form figures of 5, 1, mc, and 6. he has also found a little extra distance off the tee and is now averaging over 300 yards driving which puts him firmly in the bombers category for the first time.
Henrik Stenson‘s driving distance stats can be a bit misleading due to his use of the trusty 3 wood over the driver but when he pulls the big dog out – as he surely will a bit more this week – he’s consistently over 300 yards off the tee.
Stenson needs to start winning events like this and his most recent form in the desert of a 6th and a 3rd placed finish suggest he’s ready to contend. He has form around here with a 4th just last year.
Branden Grace, like Fowler, has found a bit extra off the tee in 2016 averaging 303.6 on the European Tour and he’s been in good form with a win and two top 5’s in his last four starts. His form around the Blue Monster has been average so far but we get inflated odds because of this.
