The 2016 European Tour is tip-toeing to it’s conclusion with a three week visit to China, starting with the WGC HSBC Champions at the Sheshan International course, a 7,261 yard Par 72 with the standard four par threes and four par fives.

We have a relatively weak field for a WGC event with both Jason Day and Jordan Spieth missing for one reason or another but we still have a resurgent Rory and the new pretender to the number 1 spot in Dustin Johnson to beat if we are to snag a winner at big odds.

The weather is forecast to be wet in the lead up to the event with rain also forecast on day one and possibly for the rest of the tournament too. This should make the course play longer than the 7,261 yards on the scorecard and the big hitters may well dominate.

Our first bet is on one of the biggest hitters of the lot in Bubba Watson. The general feeling is that Bubba has not been in the best of form by his lofty standards but his 40/1 odds reflect that, and closer inspection of his form figures tell a slightly different story. He’s actually been pretty consistent over his last five tournaments with his finishes reading 8, 13, MC, 20 and 10. he won this event in 2014 after an 8th place he year before and he comes here fresh after a month off.

No one in world golf is in better form than Alex Noren with three wins in his last nine tournaments. If he’s going to step up in class to win an event like this then now could well be the time. He hits it far enough, hits loads of greens and is putting out of his skin. His body language since he came back from serious injury has been of a man on a mission and if he continues ia similar vein to the last month then he will be knocking on the door of the world’s top 10 soon enough.

Branden Grace should not be 80/1 for any tournament, let alone one he finished 5th in the last time it was played. He, like Bubba and unlike Noren, is not in his absolute best form but it’s not that long since he recorded top 5’s in both the USOPEN and USPGA.

Kevin Kisner finished 2nd here last year to Russell Knox and he looks overpriced on that basis to go one better this week. He’s been playing well enough to comfortably make cuts without cracking the top 10 in his last 5 events.

After consultation with the man Skeeter we are adding Grillo (pronounced Grizzo) into the mix.
